About the RTI Process

How we design and implement a RTI program

Response To Intervention (RTI) is multi-tiered system in general education that helps educators identify children who need extra assistance to gain basic concepts in math and reading.  The intensity and duration of the added instruction is based on the child’s response to the instruction.  This level of help occurs before the child is referred to special education.

We designed and implemented a Response To Intervention (RTI) language program for kindergarten students who were demonstrating lagging receptive and expressive language skills at a Title I charter school.

After nine weeks of intervention, post testing revealed that 55% of the children had improved to expected grade level performance. The 45% remaining children enrolled in an additional nine-week program. Following the second cycle of intervention, only 2 of 22 children required referral for special education testing.

This RTI program allowed the children to receive intense instruction in the specific areas of receptive and expressive language skills in addition to their classroom instruction.  The boost provided by this program brought 90% of the children up to grade level within 18 weeks allowing them to return to the classroom and take full advantage of the classroom instruction.  Implementation of this program was time efficient (quick return to classroom) and cost efficient (no need for special education referral).
